Where is our Focus Robin Williams
17 Aug 2014:
Recently I was watching a few Focus On Ability, NOVA Short Film Entrants, when I read that Robin Williams committed suicide. These things together made me think of the book ‘A Fine Balance' by Rohinton Mistry.
Those that have it ‘easier' can't hack life and those that have it ‘hard' just do life no matter what is thrown at them. I know that in our life we all battle with depression and in some cases it is a disability but what is it that makes some people depressed enough to lead to suicide. Is it being alone? Not being encouraged? Focussing on the negative?
What makes people who fight through these hardships keep fighting and not give up?
At 21, my cousin, who was my age, committed suicide and I was shocked to the core. My foundations were rocked. In my eyes he had many friends, was Mr popular, had a fiance and was living ‘the dream'! I was his disabled cousin, who had a disability, had a few friends, fought through life every day and never had a boyfriend. Yet, I guess I was busy surviving and fighting to live the best life I could. It is nearly 19 years since my cousin's death and the ‘Why?' is still as unanswered today as it was then.
