Outsider Art
16 Nov 2014:
Outsider Art is a phrase that has be coined to encapsulate those artists who have produced art without any formal training. The producers of this art are normally people with a disability who have used art as a therapeutic outlet.
The word ‘Outsider' is being criticised as these artists are already on the outer margins of society and so the connotation of ‘outsider' are either highlighting their differences or focusing on their differences even further.
I find the name ‘Outsider Art', cool as their art has not followed rules and the artist has been recognised for the outlet their passion has created.
I went through a time when painting was my outlet and the genre was labelled ‘Naïve Art'.
