Jobs disABILITY Attitudes Self Belief
25 Aug 2014:
On INSIGHT on Tuesday night, there was a discussion on whether people with a disability on DSP should be working. It was a discussion that has come about due to the government wanting to get as many people under 35 with a disability in the workforce.
The panel of four people with differing disabilities, perhaps painted a bleak, but realistic, picture of their difficulty in finding a job as well as keeping a job.
The audience were also realistic in how they perceived employing someone with a disability, the thoughts that ran through their mind when coming across someone in a wheelchair, interviewing for a position at their company and the barriers they saw in employing them.
It is easy to have theories on how people with disabilities SHOULD be treated, but the REALITY does show that there are and always will be obstacles that are both physical and mental.
Having said all this, I would like to add that anything is possible and if you and your employer have a can-do-attitude the sky is the limit!
