I am a Parent with a Disability
15 Jan 2013:
I found this heartbreaking story that I wanted to share on Jo Blogs.
The followingling: http://healthland.time.com/2012/11/27/why-parents-with-disabilities-are-losing-custody-of-their-kids/ shows how judging a parent with a disability is unfair.
Just because these parents were blind and the mother was struggling to breastfeed does not mean she is a bad mother. In actual fact she was a ‘normal' mother experiencing the ‘normal' struggles that new mothers face.
Often when disable people decide to have a child they have thought long and hard about how they are going to manage and what supports they will need in place.
Parents are often judged. If you are disabled or young you could be scrutinised and judged as a bad parent. Rich parents on the other hand are judged as good parents. The bottom line is – How much time, effort and care are the parents investing in their child?
