Catching the Bus
23 Sep 2013:
About 18 months ago I wrote about wanting to catch the bus home in my new electric wheelchair. A lot has happened in the past 18 months to stop me from following through on my plans. I have struggled with fatigue and it has also been winter.
I have had a client who has inspired me to carry through with my plan as he uses the bus to get around in his electric wheelchair and I was encouraged to give it a go.
This past week we have had unbelievably warm weather and so I planned to catch the bus home from work. I researched what bus I needed to catch and where I would get on and off at. The night before I was a bit anxious as I stressed about the unknown. In the morning I thought I'd chicken out so instead of saying ‘no' altogether my husband assured me that if I did change my mind he would come and pick me up as usual.
At work I started telling people my plans of catching the bus home which was a way of keeping me accountable to go through with it. My sister offered to see me onto the bus and I let her. We waited for the bus which soon came. I had no problems getting on and within ten minutes I was at my stop. It was really not much different from drivi8ng home by car. Getting off the bus was not a problem and to my surprise a little down the path I was greeted by my husband and two dogs!
The trip was a success! My next challenge is to catch the bus to work and arrive on time. Lets hope its not raining and/or cold!
