Books about Disabilities and Awareness
8 Jul 2013:
There are some children's books out there that can be helpful in educating other children on disabilities.
This website http://036cfbe.netsolhost.com/blog/wordpress/children%E2%80%99s-books-about-disabilities-and-awareness/ has a list of books with a bit of a description.
I think these books are a great idea to introduce children to disabilities, however, nothing can replace the interaction with a child who has a disability. To get to see that a child with a disability has the same hopes and dreams and themselves. They also want to play and laugh with the rest of them.
I have seen for myself the difference between those that have interacted with people with disabilities and those that haven't.
When I went to university the students that had never known anyone in a wheelchair would take a wide path around me (so they didn't catch the sitting down bug I guess hehe!). Those that had people with disabilities in their world would come close and even hang on my chair (they knew that they couldn't catch the sitting down bug!)
Disability awareness is helpful for everyone!
